My sister was staying with me for a holiday weekend when she opened my fridge (full of food I had prepped for the holidays) and gasped, “what died in here?!”
I tried to brush the smell off as random while I pulled out everything and inspected the food. Upon opening my airtight container with washed and chopped kale for my kale salad, there was no doubt.
I couldn’t understand why my kale had gone bad when I often keep it that way for two weeks (and it had only been three days). After some googling, I learned that it’s not unusual for kale to develop that smell if it’s not fully dried (the price of impatience). So I did what any good host would do…I marinated the kale in an effort to mask the smell! it didn’t really work.
Eventually I succumbed and went out to buy, clean, and prep new kale (on a statutory holiday when many stores were closed -awesome!)
